We recently had the pleasure of scanning Camille Rose Garcia’s new artwork from her Roq la Rue solo show. Garcia has been a key part of the evolving Low-Brow and Pop Surrealist scene, and her new pieces are a vibrant celebration of the macabre themes she embraces. With her hi-gloss finishes, neon colors and glitter accents, the paintings were a fun challenge for our Betterlight Scanner, which captures even such difficult subjects beautifully.

Camille Rose Garcia’s color choices are neon and acidic, giving her work an inexplicably nightmarish quality. Lime greens and hot pinks glow discordantly against black backgrounds, making one’s skin crawl like the grinding of teeth or a cold sweat in the night. Yet there is an element of harmony in her drawings and paintings. Delicate, ornamental flowers wrap around her compositions. She shows us a picture of the nighttime come alive with spirits and supernatural presences — a party where things that were impossible in one life time are attainable in the next.

Garcia has a solo show opening this Thursday, April 3, at Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle titled “La Danse Macabre.” Named after Camille Saint-Saens’s 1874 musical piece, the title of the show alludes to the French superstition of the dead rising from their graves to dance with Death when he appears at midnight on Halloween. Like the song, Garcia’s show is sassy and comical despite the spooky undertones.
